If your eyebrows have been misshaped or overly thinned, either by your own hand or at a salon, the best thing to do is STOP! Go back to square one and let your brows grow back for a minimum of three weeks. If your eyebrows are excessively thin, it can sometimes take three or four months for them to grow in completely. You will be tempted to pluck strays, but the best thing you can do for yourself is to let them grow back as fully as possible.

Usually it is the people who are obsessed with their brows who overdo it and do what I call underestimating your eyebrows. Once your eyebrows have grown in, either go to a brow-shaping professional (if you don’t know of one, ask a friend who has fabulous brows—she may have been holding out on you!) or reshape them yourself.

As a rule, I’m personally against waxing the brows—waxing is for cars! Seriously, there is no precision with waxing: you are removing rows of hair indiscriminately, and it is very harsh on the delicate skin around the eye area. And dread the thread! Threading is acceptable if you know an expert who is truly proficient. Threading was the technique of choice in the Middle East, India, and Eastern Europe for many years before tweezers were invented. Today we have indoor plumbing, so why use an outhouse? Therefore, my technique of choice is tweezing and trimming. It offers absolute precision while being delicate on the skin. As for the pain quotient, it all depends on the person who is doing your brows, regardless of the technique.

The key to perfect eyebrows is proportion. An eyebrow should be fully actualized, meaning not too far apart or too close together, not too short or long on the ends, not too thin or too thick, and with an arch that flatters your bone structure. A good eyebrow will be in proportion to your facial features.

When I first started training others to shape eyebrows I really had to review what I know about eyebrow shaping and how to articulate it to others. I developed a few golden rules for brow shaping that ensure that eyebrows will always turn out well.
